TypeCon2010
Call for Program Proposals

TypeCon: Babel

The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) is now accepting programming proposals for its twelfth annual conference. TypeCon2010 will be held August 17-22 in Los Angeles and will strive to offer an affordable program designed for type makers and type users from all walks of life.

We are currently reviewing proposals for contemporary and historical presentations and panel discussions, focused hands-on workshops in both the digital and non-digital realms, and a variety of programming for the Type & Design Education Forum and other special events.

Topics at TypeCon cover a broad range of interests, including typography, type design, font production, graphic design, new media, printing history, calligraphy and hand lettering, the book arts, advertising, type in motion, literacy, type sales and marketing, legal issues, type and design education, and other related areas.

The TypeCon program includes:

Main Conference
Full-length presentations, “Type in 20” presentations, and panel discussions.

Pre-Conference Workshops
Full- and half-day workshops that let attendees “get their hands dirty” and expand their creative and technological horizons.

Type & Design Education Forum
Short presentations, typographic assignments, experiential workshops, type-related exercises, and student presentations of their work.

Tours & Special Events
Ideas and happenings that showcase typography and design in Los Angeles and the surrounding region.

Font Aid IV Book
Now Available Through Lulu

Font Aid IV: Coming Together

The Font Aid IV project brought together nearly 400 typographers, graphic designers, and other artists from around the world to create a font to benefit the victims of the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti. The font consists entirely of ampersands, to represent the idea of people joining to help one another. The new “Coming Together” book documents this project, displaying all of the glyphs created for the typeface, as well as the names of the contributors.

All money raised by the Font Aid IV project is being donated to Doctors Without Borders to help with their relief efforts in Haiti.
